BLACKSBURG, VA --
Hurricane Sandy is the first major storm meteorologists at the
National Weather Service's Blacksburg hub is tracking using its upgraded
Doppler radar.
The upgrade was installed earlier this month, explained Steve Keighton, the chief science officer at the facility.
The upgrade allows forecasters to "see" storms both horizontally and vertically, Keighton said. "So now we can distinguish hail from rain drops or snowflakes," Keighton said. Keighton said the upgraded system will also allow forecasters to be more confident in warnings issued during severe weather.
