DENVER - With excitement building over the half-billion dollar Powerball jackpot it's worth remembering that the lotto only exists as a way for states to raise money.
Coloradans spent $519 million on lotto tickets last year.
Each dollar spent on the lottery breaks down this way:
63 CENTS - PRIZES
The bulk of each lottery dollar goes to pay lottery winners. Without this, who would play?
15 CENTS - EXPENSES
This is the money used to run the lottery. The bulk of this money goes to the shops that sell lotto tickets in the form of commission. The rest goes to administration, marketing, and supplies like tickets and machines.
22 CENTS - PROFIT
This is the fundraising part of the lottery. In 2011, the Colorado Lottery raised $113 million. The Colorado constitution dictates that this money be spent on things like parks and conservation projects. You can track these projects county-by-county on the Colorado lottery website.
Colroado's approach is rare. Most states allocate their lottery profits to education.
However, Pennsylvania puts its profits toward programs for senior citizens and Kansas spends most profits on economic development.
