Elections officials in states that Hurricane Sandy
hit last week are scrambling to make it possible for registered voters
to cast ballots on Tuesday after storm damage and power failures
displaced many residents and made polling places unusable. Here is how
to find out where to vote in three states in the New York City region:
NEW YORK STATE
In New York City, information is available by visiting vote.nyc.ny.us,
calling (212) 868-3692 or 311, or texting NYCVOTES to 877-877.
Elsewhere, information is available by calling (800) 367-8683 or
contacting your county elections board; a list is at www.elections.ny.gov/CountyBoards.html. Information on poll site changes is at www.elections.ny.gov/CountyBOEStormInfo.html
or (855) 697-7263. Voters will also be permitted to cast a provisional
ballot in person at any polling place in the state, regardless of where
in the state they are registered to vote. Voters who encounter problems
at the polls can call a hot line operated by the state attorney general,
(800) 771-7755, or e-mail civil.rights@ag.ny.gov.
NEW JERSEY
Information is available by calling (877) 658-6837 or contacting the election officials in your county; a list is at nj.gov/state/elections/voting-information-local-officials.html.
To help voters displaced by the storm, the state will allow voting by
e-mail or fax. Voters will be permitted to cast a provisional ballot in
person at any polling place in the state, regardless of where in the
state they are registered to vote.
CONNECTICUT
Information is available at (860) 509-6100 or www.dir.ct.gov/sots/LookUp.aspx. Voters needing more information may also call their local registrar of voters; a list of phone numbers is at www.sots.ct.gov/sots/lib/sots9/electionservices/lists9/rov_phone_list.pdf. Voters who encounter problems at the polls can also call a state hot line, (866) 733-2463, or e-mail elections@ct.gov.
