Youth Parade & Rally: From Paseo and Truman Road to Bethel Square, 2329 Flora Ave., 11 a.m. Theme is “One Heart, One Mind, One Spirit Celebrating Unity Through Diversity.” Thirty-five minute march followed by indoor celebration. Kansas City Art Institute: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Epperson Auditorium, 4415 Warwick Blvd. Free program starts with film, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., A Perspective,” followed at noon by speakers including journalist and educator Charles Coulter and music by St. Therese Little Flower gospel choir. Birthday cake and punch provided, along with free lapel buttons honoring King and Black History Month.

Kansas City Mass Celebration: André Butler, executive vice-president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, will speak. Attendees are encouraged to bring toiletries to support the local clubs, 6 p.m., St. Stephen Baptist Church, 1414 E. Truman Road.
Jazz concert: The Doug Talley Quartet performs, with compositions by African-American jazz greats and audience sing-along of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” noon, Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., followed by reception. Free, donations welcome.
9th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy and Scholarship Awards Dinner:
Lee’s Summit community-wide celebration: 6 p.m., The Pavilion at John Knox Village, 520 N.W. Murray Road, with pre-show and reception, and performances by local music and school groups. www.cityofls.net
26th annual Independence observance: 7 p.m., Truman Memorial Building, 416 E. Maple Ave., with program titled “Dr. King Speaks through Our Young People.” The Chris Kelly Praise Dancers will perform. Public invited.
