IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys are in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East with two games remaining in the regular season.
Dallas' overtime victory against Pittsburgh placed the Cowboys in this tie with New York and Washington.
On Monday afternoon, coach Jason Garrett repeated his stance that the Cowboys don't care about first place.
"We do our best when we focus on ourselves and focus on the task at hand," he said. "We have to clean up [the Pittsburgh] ballgame. There were a lot of good things in this game. But we’ve got to clean up the things that weren’t good in all three phases, and similarly we’ve got to focus on the task, and the task is to beat the New Orleans Saints [on Sunday]. They had a great win yesterday against Tampa, so we’ve got to get our preparation right, we’ll do it day by day and hopefully we’ll put our best foot forward on Sunday."
It's this approach that Garrett has maintained since the moment he took over as coach. He doesn't believe in looking ahead, rather focusing on what must be accomplished about what's in front of him that particular day. Garrett didn't even want to talk about looking at the NFL schedule when it's released in the spring.
"Our mindset around here is that we always control our own destiny," he said. "When you do your best work in life is when you focus on the task at hand, not distracted by the things around you. That’s what we try to convey to our players, is go to work every day and let’s be at our best, let’s be our best on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and prepare to be our best on Sunday and then go play our best. If you do that, you give yourself your best chance of being successful."
