Not-so-happy holidays for sum of us

Remember all that talk last week about making up for losses and paying off some Christmas debt with a winning streak to end the season? It didn’t exactly go that way. Instead, we tossed some more cash on the Yule log and watched it go up the chimney in smoke like Santa after stuffing his face with cookies.
If you haven’t started already, you might want do the opposite of whatever I suggest the rest of the way. The Patriots had absolutely no chance of covering the 141⁄2-point spread yesterday, sleepwalking through a 23-16 win against the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla. Chad Henne might want to get himself traded back to the AFC East because the Pats always seem to make him look like Peyton Manning. Henne did enough to keep a bad Jags team in the game, and the Patriots fell to 8-7 against the spread despite improving their real record to 11-4.
Folks who bet the over suffered a similar fate, as the teams never threatened the 50-point total. The over fell to 10-3-2.
More importantly, my record is down to 5-11, a catastrophic season after a lucrative 2011. But this happens in the gambling world, and the only option is to make a killing next week and in the playoffs.
The Patriots host Miami in the regular-season finale, and after the Texans’ loss to the Vikings, they are alive for a first-round bye if they can win and get a Houston loss in Indianapolis.
Typically this would be a great spot to take the Dolphins and watch Bill Belichick throw in the towel like he did in 2006, when Doug Flutie pulled off the drop kick. The Pats successfully tried to lose that game against Miami to get a better path in the postseason.
But now, a win is huge. And since it’s a 1 p.m. game (as is the contest in Indy), the Pats will go full-throttle, maybe even with Rob Gronkowski back on the field.
For what it’s worth (probably nothing), I like a big double bet on the Pats, who will roll.
